According to a survey by Jobvite, 93% of recruiters now review the social media profiles of candidates during the hiring process.
The survey also revealed that 79% are using LinkedIn, 26% using Facebook and 14% are using Twitter for hiring suitable people.
Your CV might be as chunky and comprehensive as ‘The Goblet of Fire’. All the relevant skills and experience listed on your LinkedIn profile might make you a genuine standout for the vacancy. However, would a quick look at your social media accounts encourage the NHS recruitment manager to turn your application down?
Think of it like this: the recruiter is impressed with your CV and is about to pick up the phone and invite you for an interview. But before they dial your telephone number, they type your name into the Facebook search bar – remember that 93% of recruiters do this.
The top result is a questionable post of yours from six months earlier. It raises suspicion and changes their mind.
Next they pick up your CV and walk over to a shredder before slowly lowering it in and reducing it to tiny little pieces just like the applications of other unsuccessful candidates – some of whom are no way near as experienced as you.
Your social media presence has let you down – it’s your Achilles’ heel.

What NHS Managers Don’t Want to See
The Jobvite report revealed:
- 83% said the worst thing to find is any reference to illicit substances
- 70% said posts of a sexual nature were a turn-off
- 44% thought posts about alcohol were a concern
- 1 in 6 said political affiliations played a factor
Consider that 61% of hiring managers said they had changed their mind about a candidate after viewing their social profiles – they are now making hiring decisions based on their discoveries.
Additionally, you should also re-read your application and get someone else to proofread your CV and covering letter.
This is because 66% of recruiters take spelling and grammar into consideration – with the number undoubtedly higher for administration and data-based roles.
What Can You Do About It?
Delete Inappropriate Content
This can be a simple, yet time-consuming, method of improving your digital footprint. If there’s anything that’s inappropriate on your social media profiles that you could be embarrassed about, hit delete.
Quickly delete Tweets, remove Facebook statuses, and un-tag images you’re tagged in that could paint you in a bad light. Be comprehensive as it could make all the difference.
Adjust Privacy Settings
Take control by managing your privacy settings across all your social media accounts:
Facebook – Limit who can see your existing posts by navigating to ‘customise settings’ and changing post privacy to friends of friends, public or only friends.
Tip: Click ‘view as’ which appears to the bottom right of your header to see how your profile would appear to others.
Twitter – If your Twitter account is used for getting into heated political or football-related debates, change your username to a nickname, and use an image that’s not your own face.
Tip: To make sure that only your followers can see your tweets or to ensure that other users must send a request to follow you, click ‘protect my tweets’.
Instagram – If you think your Instagram account includes photos that recruiters might question, toggle the ‘posts are private’ setting to ‘on’ so only approved followers can see your post.
Tip: All accounts are automatically set to be visible to all, so settings must be changed manually.
Take More Care
If you’re having second thoughts about something that you’re posting, really consider if it’s worth it.
This is also applicable to existing employees. Avoid posting negative comments about your current place of work, because once they’re live, posts exist in the public domain and could get you into trouble. If not now, then further down the line.
