You may have poured hours and hours into creating your vision of the perfect CV, the honest and brutal truth is that most recruiters will only skim over it in less than 30 seconds. That means that you, like most advertisements, have to sell yourself and your CV in that time. Fortunately, we here at GoToJobBoard work very closely with recruiters and can share our 5 insider tips on how what healthcare recruiters look for when recruiting for the NHS (and how to make sure your CV isn’t thrown away).
Use known healthcare/educational brand names
Using names that get attention is a biggie. In the UK, the obvious big name in healthcare is the NHS, however other brands are also popular, such as BUPA, BMI etc. If you have worked for other large brand companies outside of the healthcare sector, it is always worthwhile to include them in your CV. Recruiters are people too, so will recognise most household brands and the connotations associated with them.
If you haven’t worked for a large or known company, it is always worthwhile to put a one line stating a positive (i.e. largest advertising company in Sheffield).
*Secret* - if your company also serves a large brand name, you should include this name in your CV for a cheeky additional brand mention.
Keywords in your CV
Recruiters love searching through a CV for keywords. Brand names can also be used as keywords but recruiters also mainly look for skills.
To make a recruiter fall in love with your CV, have a skills section that lists all potential keywords that a recruiter may look for. If you are a programmer, you may use all the programming languages and use technical jargon you may know. If you are a marketer, you can list the different social media platforms you use and certain marketing practices you know.
When describing your job roles, it is good to repeat these skills but also to delve deeper into specific skills, such as market segmentation (for a marketer) or regression (for a programmer).
*Secret* - some (not all) recruiters use CTRL + F to see how many times a keyword will appear in your CV. Check your CV and see how many times certain keywords come up.
Include every role you have done
That bar job you had over the summer may not be relevant to your application of a .NET developer within the NHS but it will fill any gaps in your employment and show your drive for employment. Short gaps may not be an issue, especially if you work as a contractor. But is good to explain why there was a gap in the first place - such as maternity leave, travelling, searching for next job etc.
*Secret* - while it is good to list every employment, not all will need details of your experience –especially if it is unrelated to the role you are applying for. Make a table to summarise all the different roles you have had.
Show any advances or progression
Once a recruiter has checked your CV for keywords and recognisable brand names, they will start to look in more detail at your CV. This is where you need to show how you have grown and how it is relatable to your job search. If you have had a role for 6 years without any progression or extra responsibility, it may signal a lack of ambition in the recruiter.
If you are a programmer, you can state in each job what different languages you learned and why. If you are a healthcare assistant, you can state the extra responsibilities you were given.
*Secret* - if you struggle on how to show any official advances or progression within a role, think about how the role has helped you grow as a person and use that instead.
And obviously, make your CV easily available for recruiters
Now your CV is great and will wow any recruiter, make it work for you by uploading it to job boards, such as GoToJobBoard (for specialist NMNC roles within the NHS) or Job Site (for more general roles).
